TitleFAST Upgrade to Version 1.5.1
FAST has been slightly redesigned to accomodate for a new Windows Mobile-based platform. As such, the existing Palm Pilot users may require additional steps to update previous versions. Below are the steps necessary to upgrade from version 1.5.0 and older to the latest version (version 1.5.1 as of when this article was produced).
Note: This article is for Palm Pilot users that wish to continue using the Palm Pilot platform in conjuction with the latest version of FAST Desktop. For Windows handheld users please email support@mtsinc.ca for further instructions.
  • A. IMPORTANT: First and foremost the existing database and files need to be backed up. The default installation direction of C:\Program Files\FAST\ will be used throughout this article and referred to as the "FAST folder". If this differs from your system then you will have to find the location that FAST was installed to.

    1. Close FAST Desktop and all connections to the database.
    2. Copy the folders "Data" and "Documents" from the "FAST folder" to a separate location (ie: the Desktop).
  • B. The new version of FAST required the HanDBase Enterprise conduit to synchronize with ODBC data sources. To check that HanDBase Enterprise is installed:

    1. Open the Control Panel and then open "Add/Remove Programs".
    2. Look for "HanDBase Enterprise for PalmOS v3.5". If you see another version (ie: "Professional" or otherwise) uninstall it.
    3. Reinstall HanDBase Enterprise (please contact us as support@mtsinc.ca if you do not have the installer).
  • C. Uninstall FAST Desktop:

    1. Open the Control Panel and then open "Add/Remove Programs".
    2. Look for "FAST" and uninstall it.
  • D. Install the latest version of FAST. Please contact us and we can send an email with a link to download the latest version.

    1. Follow the instructions here: How to: install FAST. NOTE: The version of HanDBase that will be installed will be the Enterprise edition.
    2. Do not launch/open FAST Desktop, please continue to the next step below.
  • E. Restore the database and documents:

    1. Copy the folders ("Data" and "Documents") that were backed up in Step A into the FAST folder (the installation folder that you defined in Step D.1).
    2. Open FAST Desktop. It will prompt for an ODBC data source.
    3. Click on the "DSN Admin" button to view a list of data sources currently on the computer. Add a new data source for the database, specifying the appropriate driver (Microsoft Access or SQL Server). Enter the details for the data source and save it. When you close the ODBC Administrator window the new data sourse will be available in the drop-down list.
    4. Select the new data source and click on Test. If the Test is successfully, click on Accept.
  • F. Auto-map the Palm users:

    1. Follow these steps to auto-map the user: Remapping the HotSync Conduit.
