Jar Testing (7120) and Hypo Chlorination and Pump Labs (8155)

Typical Course Length: 3 days

Course Times: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

CEUs: 1.8

Jar Testing (7120)

Description: This one day program orientated for water and wastewater operators of treatment plants is mainly a hands-on laboratory style course. The shorter theory modules will help operators understand the basic chemistry concepts for coagulation and flocculation and the affects of pH on these processes and how to adjust it accordingly. This knowledge is then demonstrated by the operators in the lab with the Jar testing apparatus and all of the necessary equipment. Safety and math are covered as they apply to the particular subject. Topics and Objectives include:

·         Coagulation and Flocculation Theory: Understand the chemistry for Coagulation and Flocculation

·         Jar Testing Equipment and Safety: Identify the equipment utilized in the lab and the safety aspects of them

·         Jar Testing Lab Procedures: Show the proper lab procedures that will produce the best results

·         Math: Understand the math that generates the dosage into a concentration

·         Affects of pH on Coagulation and Flocculation: Comprehend pH and the affects on the coagulation and flocculation process

·         pH Adjustment lab: Demonstrate how to manipulate the pH

Hypochlorination And Pump Labs (8155)

Description: This course covers the theory and science of sodium and calcium hypochlorination and designed for water system operators responsible for disinfection utilizing hypochlorites and operating hypochlorinators. Topics: types of hypochlorites; importance of disinfection and monitoring process; chlorination concepts; safety and handling practices, basic math refresher and hands on lab time with the pumps. Topics & Objectives include:

·         Theory of Disinfection and chlorination: Understand the concepts of disinfection and processes of chlorination

·         Basic Math: Refresher of Area, Volumes, Percent and Concentrations

·         Sampling Lab: Colorimeter Sampling and Analysis

·         Principles of hypochlorination: Understanding Sodium and Calcium Hypochlorites

·         Math: Learning Concentration and dosing calculations

·         Pump Lab: Working with pump components and tearing down pumps

·         Hypochlorination Systems: Understanding the design, operation and maintenance of the system

·         Hypochlorinator Lab: Introduction to calcium Hypochlorinators and rebuilding pumps

·         Safety, Handling and Troubleshooting Hypochlorinators: Learn to identify problems and preventative maintenance to correct the syst

·         Calibration Lab: Final review exercise to calibrate a pump to dose a correct calculated dose
