Installing UtiliTrak

This support article assumes that there are NO prior versions or installations of UtiliTrak or any dependant application (ie: Palm Desktop, HanDBase, etc.). From this article you will be able to install (or reinstall) UtiliTrak from scratch. Screenshots to follow...

A. Prerequisites:

  • IBM PC or compatible. 600Mhz or UtiliTraker. 512KB or more of memory. At least 100MB of free disk space.
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 or later (XP Professional SP2 is preferred) with the latest service packs installed. NOTE: Administrative priviledges are required.
  • Palm-based handheld. (Palm T|X is recommended).
  • Palm Desktop, latest version for the Palm-handheld model that will be used when synchronizing. (PalmOne Desktop Website or CD that came bundled with the handheld)
  • HanDBase 3.51 Sync Exchange conduit (Sync Exchange for MS Access). NOTE: If you are synchronizing with an ODBC Data Source (ie: Microsoft SQL Server) then you will need the ODBC version (ODBC Version)
  • UtiliTrak Registration Code. You can obtain this by purchasing UtiliTrak at MTS Inc.
  • UtiliTrak Installation CD. (Latest version is 1.1.4).

B. Installing Palm Desktop

If you are using a handheld to collect field data and synchronizing with the desktop PC in an office you will need to install Palm Desktop first. If you have not already installed this software, please follow these steps.

NOTE: This software is third-party software. MTS requires this software to be installed to extend the functionality of our software. MTS does not offer any warranty or support for the handheld or the software provided with it. For warranty or support inquiries, please contact your place of purchase or the manufacturer of the hardware/software. These instructions are provided as a convenience and in case of a discrepancy between these and the manufacturer's instructions, please refer to the manufacturer. Should you require a registration or serial number for this software, please refer to the manufacturer's website for information regarding the purchase and licensing of this software.

  1. Insert the Palm Desktop CD that came with the handheld, or download the software from the PalmOne Desktop software website.
  2. Install Palm Desktop, following the on-screen instructions. Using the default settings should be sufficient.
  3. Make sure you follow the instructions EXACTLY when prompted to HotSync the handheld.
  4. Should there be any errors during the initial HotSync, please resolve those before moving to the next set of instructions.

C. Installing UtiliTrak Handheld

Follow these steps to install UtiliTrak on to your handheld device.

  1. Insert the UtiliTrak Installation CD.
  2. Navigate to "Palm Software".
  3. Double-click on "UtiliTrak.prc" and "HanDBaseRT.prc". Select the appropriate handheld user that you wish to install this software to. Typically, you will select the handheld user that you specified during the installation of the Palm Desktop software in Step B.
  4. HotSync the handheld to install the software to the handheld device.
  5. If there are no errors, navigate to the Home on the handheld and tap UtiliTrak. You will see a screen that tells you it is "Initializing... Please wait..."

D. Installing the HanDBase Conduit

This software is used in conjunction with the Palm Desktop software in order to provide extended functionality between the handheld UtiliTrak software and the desktop PC UtiliTrak software. It will allow you to synchronize your handheld data with the desktop PC data.

NOTE: This software is third-party software. MTS requires this software to be installed to extend the functionality of our software. Installation:

  1. Insert the HanDBase CD, or download the software from the HanDBase website. If you are synchronizing with the default UtiliTrak database, purchase/download the Sync Exchange for MS Access conduit software. If you are synchronizing with an ODBC data source (ie: Microsoft SQL Server), download the Sync Exchange for ODBC conduit software.
  2. Install the approriate HanDBase Sync Exchange conduit, following the on-screen instructions.
  3. Once the installation of HanDBase Sync Exchange has completed, HotSync the handheld with the desktop PC. <-- VERY IMPORTANT!

E. Installing UtiliTrak Desktop

This step with install the UtiliTrak software to your desktop PC. You will need a valid registration code (obtained by contacting MTS Inc) in order to run the software.

Installation:

  1. Insert the UtiliTrak Installation CD, or download the software from the MTS Inc website (http://www.mtsinc.ca/).
  2. Run "Setup.exe" and follow the on-screen instructions. Select the default settings. NOTE: Installing to a network is beyond the scope of this article. Please contact MTS Inc support for further instructions.
  3. Once UtiliTrak has been installed, double-click on the UtiliTrak icon on the desktop to run the software.
  4. When prompted to enter the registration code, enter each line EXACTLY. Click on "OK" to continue.

F. UtiliTrak Desktop Online Updates

In order to ensure you have the latest version of UtiliTrak you should run the Online Updater. This requires an active Internet connection.

  1. Open UtiliTrak (double-click on the UtiliTrak icon on the desktop).
  2. Click on "Help" -> "Check for Online Updates...". This will close UtiliTrak and open UtiliTrak Online Updater.
  3. Click on "Start". If there are updates available it will display a message with the version and the major updates in that version. If there are no newer versions available, it will display that instead.
  4. Click on "OK". Once the updater has downloaded the update, follow the on-screen directions to complete the upgrade installation.
  5. If UtiliTrak doesn't restart on it's own, open it again by double-clicking on the desktop icon.
  6. Repeat steps 2 to 5 to update the software until it displays the message that there are no newer versions available.

Install Complete!
