This course is designed to assist field staff troubleshoot and repair water and sewer pumps. Hydraulics are introduced to assist with getting the best efficiency for the utility. At the end of the two day session the Pump Station Operator will have a better understanding of the importance of pump maintenance as it related to the operating expenses of the utility. The operator will also have the confidence to troubleshoot and tear down water and sewer pumps to perform basic repairs.

1.       Water Pump Fundamentals - Including wear rings and Impeller height settings

2.       Pump Cavitation and NPSH - Cavitation costs, modifying system parameters to resolve / minimize damage

3.       Pump Curves and Hydraulics - Includes affinity laws to begin the discussion on Variable frequency drives

4.       Sewer Pump Fundamentals including wire to water efficiency - Discuss true long term cost of ownership of various types of sewage pumps

5.       Pump rebuilding, bearing installation and troubleshooting - How to identify thrust direction and identify causes of bearing failure

 

6.       Pump alignment and next steps to increased efficiency - Alignment fundamentals, soft foot, base grouting, effects of piping strain

The Small Water Systems course provides a working knowledge of water distribution and water treatment practices, focusing on the basic aspects of system construction, operations, and maintenance. This 3 day course will be of value to all operators of water distribution and/or water treatment systems, particularly those that serve a population of less than 500

Regulations & Responsibilities - Understand the operator requirements and the regulatory requirements 

Watersheds, Sources & Wells - Identify the water sources for a small water system

Treatment - Acknowledge the requirements and methods for treatment

Storage & Math - Comprehend the math formulas used for volume, dosage and cleaning

Disinfection - Understand disinfection principles and the application, of hypo chlorination

Distribution Systems - Recognize the purpose of maintaining and troubleshooting a distribution system

Water Quality & Sampling - Understand and define water quality along with the proper techniques for sampling

Safety - Re-enforce the necessity and requirements of Safety

Confined Space Awareness

This 1 day program is designed for utility operators required to work in and around confined spaces. The session provides a review of confined space entry programs & procedures as listed in the WCB Regulations, as well as a demonstration of equipment and personal protective equipment. Agenda items include:

  •         General Requirements & Responsibilities - Understanding the basic requirements & responsibilities of a CS Program
  •         CS Identification & Hazard Assessments - How to inventory CS & procedures for hazard assessments
  •         Lockout & Isolation - Requirements & application of lockout & isolation procedures
  •         Verification, Testing & Isolation - How to properly monitor, record & reduce atmospheric hazards
  •         Standby Personnel & Rescue - Understanding standby responsibilities & Rescue procedures
  •         Fall Protection & Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) - Requirements for and use of equipment and PPE
  •         CS Program Implementation & Manual - How to implement or update a CS Program

 

Confined Space Entry Level II

(Prerequisite: Confined Space Awareness)

This (1) day course provides proper procedures & practical exercise’s for students to safely enter a confined space using standard CS entry techniques & equipment with an additional component utilizing specialized techniques for simultaneous multiple worker entries. Topics Include:

  •          Regulations & Responsibilities - a review of OHS regulations & responsibilities,
  •          Hazards & Precautions - understanding hazards and learning precautions to eliminate,
  •          Inspection and Review of Equipment and PPE - reviewing function and operation of confined space entry equipment
  •          Knots, Rope and Specialized Equipment - Learn and demonstrate constructing a rope system for multiple worker entry
  •          Pre-Plan (Workers and Task)-  to Develop and organize a task plan
  •          Preparing Personnel for Entry / Inspection - understanding procedures and how to inspect equipment prior to use
  •          Preparing the Space for Entry - Learn how to set up equipment and prepare the space / area for entry
  •          Entry into a Confined Space - learning and demonstrating safe enter of a confined space
  •          Exiting a Confined Space - learn and demonstrate safe exit of a confined space
  •    .   Man-down Non-Entry Rescue Procedure - learn non-entry extraction techniques
  •        Post Entry Procedures

 

The course also provides a non-entry rescue exercise.
